How to Purify Your Tap Water

The water we drink should be clean, fresh, and free of any toxic substance that could make us feel sick. Unfortunately, tap water is far from this ideal of perfection and it often contains so many impurities that we can hardly drink it. If you turn on the tap and you don’t like what you see, it’s time to look for ways to purify your tap water and we have some ideas of the matter to share with you.

Use a water filter

One way to purify tap water and perhaps the most efficient is to use a water filter to get rid of all the unwanted impurities in it. Water filters take tap water and run it through a series of cartridges that gradually collect particles found in the water, even the smallest ones. A good quality water filter can even remove the unpleasant chlorine odor and the germs and bacteria that wander in the water. You can either install separate water filters on various taps in your house or you can go for a whole house water filter that handles the main water pipe that sends water to every tap.

Boil the water

Another idea of purifying tap water is to boil it in order to eliminate the impurities as they evaporate. This method is widely known and it has been used for decades by people living in areas with poor quality water. However, boiling water doesn’t remove every single impurity in the water as some of them don’t react to high temperatures but it will manage to kill the dangerous bacteria that could get you sick. After the water has boiled, let it sit for a few minutes so all the solid particles that didn’t evaporate will go to the bottom of the pot and you will be able to avoid drinking them.

Make distilled water

Distilled water is also safer for drinking because it doesn’t contain the contaminants of tap water. You can obtain it by using a water distiller at home which is a device based on a boiling process meant to eliminate some of the impurities found in water. It basically boils the water so it will become steam and the impurities are left behind as the steam is cooled and turned into water again. The drawback of this method is that some impurities boil before the water does so they also become steam that is then turned into water so some of them remain.
