Leaking pipes might be some of the worst enemies of a household. If water infiltrates in the property’s structure, the damage will be enormous, not to mention the vast amount of valuables that could be lost in a flood caused by leaking pipes, not to mention the inconvenience caused by such events. But knowing how to deal with such issues will certainly prevent damage and save you plenty of time. Below are some of the most useful tips and tricks you could apply in case of a leaking pipe.

1. Invest in proper tools

If you want to be able to stop water leaking, you must invest in proper tools and equipment pieces, first. You cannot deal with a leaking pipe with whatever pieces you have in a tool box, but you need special items. Below is a short list of those.

  • Needle-nose pliers: detail work and reaching tight areas between your pipes will become easier with a pair of these.
  • Locking pliers: many experts recommend these over an adjustable wrench since they offer more control.
  • Plumber’s putty: this is oftentimes used to create a water-resistant sealer on pipes with no pressure in joints. Very useful if you notice a leaking sink, for instance.
  • Plumber’s tape: a good thing to have in your toolbox is a roll of plumber’s tape, also known as Teflon tape, it will assure a good deal on various pipes. Consider it as an element of your toolbox.
  • Basin wrench: if your need to reach inaccessible points under your sink, this is the best tools one could use. So, add it to your toolbox.

2. Learn how to spot water leakage

Keep in mind that leaking pipes are not always easy to spot. In fact, most of those are well-hidden in your property’s structure, which makes those even harder to detect. And keep in mind that some leaking pipes will give signs of suffering, only when it is too late, and the water already invaded your home. It is highly important to invest in an insurance policy with a wide coverage. In many cases, fixing a leaking pipe means that you have to remove hardwood flooring and other elements as well. This is why it is best to be covered by your insurance plan.

3. Insulated pipes are less likely to suffer damage

Especially during the cold winter months, not insulated pipes are very likely to freeze and bust. This is why you want to make sure that you create a strategy to manage this successfully. If you lack the necessary knowledge, have a team of professionals by. This is not an easy task, but it is highly important.

4. Pay attention to your appliances

In many cases, guilty of a midnight flood are the appliances. When installing new ones, make sure that the connections between those and the water system are well-done. This will give you the peace of mind that leaking water in your living room is unlikely to appear.
